FOLLOWING WORSHIP this coming Sunday, Pastor Susan will reflect on 32 years of ministry at Advent. How did we grow, who are we now, and what's the religious climate for the transition out of being church in a pandemic. She will also share what's coming up next for her and Bishop Roger.
NEXT WORSHIP ON THE GREEN - Sunday, October 2, at 8:30 a.m. (outside). If it rains we will move inside the church.
WEDNESDAY EVENING PROGRAMMING - Dinner is provided for participants at 6:00 pm; programming starts at 6:30 pm. We still need volunteers to provide these meals. Click here to sign up to volunteer for Wednesday night dinner. If you haven’t signed up yet, the year of 2022-23 is linked here.
WORSHIP ASSISTANTS NEEDED – If you would like to serve on Sunday morning as a Communion Assistant, Lector or Acolyte (Confirmation Youth), please click this link and select a date. It’s wonderful to have Advent members participate in worship!
THURSDAY NIGHT at 7:00 p.m. SIGNS & WONDERS Zoom study. This course, led by Pastor Susan, will include video introductions by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine (the author) and lively conversation about some of Jesus' most amazing miracles. OCTOBER 9th - OKTOBERFEST – Join us after Worship for beer, brats, franks, sauerkraut and Bavarian pretzels. At 11:30 a.m. the wonderful Festhaus Musikanten polka band returns for dancing and listening pleasure! Huge THANK YOU to Tom Williams and Guaranteed Foods for providing the food and to Limitless Brewing Company for donating the beer. Free will offering to benefit Advent's Scholarship Fund and FaithHopeAfrica sponsorships. We also need volunteers to help at the event. Please check the kiosk and sign up to help, we need you!
CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS FOR WINTER The Overland Park Police Department we be at the church for Oktoberfest collecting gently used coats, hoodies, beanies and gloves that will be donated to City Union Mission. You can start bringing the items to church now to fill up our carts.
OCTOBER 16th – Special Congregational Meeting after worship. This meeting will be held in person, and will also be available via Zoom. All voting members* of Advent should plan to attend this important meeting for the sole purpose of acting on the Council's recommendation to extend a call to Pastor Anteneh (when his current call expires along with Pastor Susan's departure). No other business will be conducted at this meeting. (Annual Meeting is December 4.) *Please note: a Voting Member is an active member of Advent who has been confirmed. Active status indicates a member who has communed or contributed in the previous year. Due to the pandemic, your status may be in question if you have not contributed nor attended worship in person, as we do not know if you have communed. If you are uncertain as to your current status, simply attend worship before the meeting Oct 16, or check with the office beforehand.
OCTOBER 22nd – Holiday Bazaar, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
Trunk or Treat at 5:30 p.m. Bring your costumed little goblins and join the spooky fun. Advent’s Truck or Treat is a free event so invite your friends and family. If you would like to decorate your car and “host a truck” and pass out candy, please email Brenda at email@example.com. We will determine closer to the date if we will have the event outside or in the fellowship hall.
OCTOBER 30th – Reformation Sunday – We will celebrate both the Reformation as well as the 2022 Class of Confirmands who will affirm their baptism through the Rite of Confirmation at the 10:00 a.m. worship service.
NOVEMBER 6th – All Saints Sunday - If you have lost a loved one since last November, please enter their name and your relationship in the All Saints Book which will be in the narthex in October, or let the office know. The list will be included in the bulletin for All Saints, and the names of Advent members and immediate family of members who have died since last November will be read in worship with the tolling of the bells.
