Worship With Us
Every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection. For Lutherans, worship is an ever-changing, growing experience. Connected with and central to everything we do, worship unites us in celebration, engages us in thoughtful dialogue and helps us grow in faith. It grounds us in our Christian and Lutheran roots, while demonstrating practical relevance for today’s world.
The Church Year orders our worship and our lives, with the ebb and flow of the seasons of the Church: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost and the Season after Pentecost (Ordinary Time.) We follow the New Revised Common Lectionary (a three-year cycle of Bible readings) from the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the Bible.
There is a basic pattern for worship among Lutherans. We gather. We encounter God’s Word. We share a meal at the Lord’s table. And we are sent into the world. But we do not think about worship so much in terms of what we do. Worship is fundamentally about what God is doing and our response to God’s action. Worship is an encounter with God, who saves us through the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our Thursday evening worship, known as "Thursday Worship" is offered as an alternative for those who work, travel or expect to be unavailable on Sunday morning for worship. This casual service uses a relaxed liturgy known as "The Chicago Service," and the same Bible lessons and sermon that will be preached on the coming Sunday. Thursday Worship is, as are all the other primary gatherings of the community of Advent, a service of Holy Communion, and begins at 7 p.m. each Thursday, with the exception of the seasons of Advent and Lent, when Thursday Worship suspends in favor of our Wednesday evening midweek vesper services.
During the Seasons of Advent and Lent, we gather on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. for Holden Evening Prayer (a Vespers service.) This quiet and beautiful service sets a meditative tone. All are welcome to join us prior to worship at
6 p.m. for a Chili Supper, provided by our Confirmation small groups.
