ALERT!  WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE:  FALL SCHEDULE BEGINS NEXT WEEK Please make a note that today is the last two-service Sunday of the summer.  We return to our 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship schedule on September 12.

COME TO THE PICNIC!  The Laotian Worshiping Community invites the Advent congregation to its summer picnic.  The festivities start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, September 18, at Heritage Park Shelter 1.

SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICES COMING UP - September 12, the day we switch back to our Fall schedule, will be Youth Sunday.  Our amazing young members from Confirmation who attended Rainbow Trail Camp and the high schoolers who participated in the Florida Mission trip will lead the Advent youth in providing the worship experience at all three services that day.  September 26 we will be honored to have worship led by Bishop Emeritus Charlie Maahs, with popular speaker Nathan Dungan of Share Save Spend bringing dynamic words about our “family values” in regard to money and faith. Don’t miss these special services, coming up in September!

CHURCH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW as part of the Labor Day weekend.

REGULAR CHANCEL CHOIR REHEARSALS BEGIN THIS WEDNESDAY

MISSION TEAM ANNUAL FUND RAISER - MissionFest 2010 is scheduled for October 2 at the Mahaffie Farmstead in Olathe. Good news! The ticket price of $50 per ticket has stayed the same for all 4 years of MissionFest.  Again this year we will have great food, drink, fellowship, door prizes and live music in exchange for your ticket purchase. There will also be silent and live auctions throughout the evening. Tickets are on sale now!   Purchase your tickets by September 1, 2010 and you will be entered into a drawing for one of two $250 gift cards to be given away at MissionFest. (One drawing entry for every ticket purchased.) If you have any questions about the MissionFest event or about Mission Team events and projects please see Harold Boxberger.

MONDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY - Join us at 7 p.m. in the library. The reading is Luke 15:1-10 for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost. Bring your Bible and join us.

NEW DAYTIME BIBLE CLASS COMING IN SEPTEMBER “Learn the Story, Live the Story.”  This weekly class will trace the story of the people of Israel, beginning with the book of Genesis.  From there we’ll travel through Exodus and then on to Joshua and Judges.  If you have never done an overview of the story that is the foundation of Christianity, this is the class for you.  We’ll meet on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., beginning on September 15.  Childcare can be requested.

LIVING INTO YOUR CALL - Frederick Buechner once said, “Your calling is where your own greatest joy intersects with the needs of the world.” Taking the time to discern your call is an important component of your faith life. To assist you in the discernment process, Advent provides its members with Living Your Strengths, a book and on-line assessment tool that will help you define what your strengths are and how you can optimize them in your vocation. Beginning today, we are handing out free copies of the book between services. The only condition of accepting one is that you sign-up for a debriefing class that will be offered several times this fall.  If you have any questions please contact Becky Llewellyn in the church office.

WOMEN’S EVENING BIBLE STUDY - Most of us have probably heard of Adam, Abraham, Sarah & Jacob.  This study takes us on a “walk” if you will with these famous characters.  We’ll walk with Adam as he leaves Eden; with Abraham and Sarah as they follow God to the promised land; and Jacob as he flees away from the land. And may you learn—as Jacob did on his own journey - that “God is in this place (and in these stories) and I did not know it.”  We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at 7:30p.m. at church.  All are welcome

WEAVERS OF THE WORD - Weavers of the Word has published their reading list for the 2010 - 2011 book reading season.  We meet on the 1st Sunday of the Month for Bible study and the 3rd Sunday of each month for a book discussion.  Our first book of the season is Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson.  Plan on joining us on Sunday evening, September 19th, at 7:00 p.m. at Starbucks on 151st and Metcalf for discussion. Our Bible study book for the year is Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian by Thomas G. Long.  That discussion starts October 3rd. For a complete reading list see the bookmarks posted on the kiosk.  Contact Julie Stuckey (782-0120) if you have any questions.

YOUTH & FAMILY SUNDAY, September 12th. Join us for Youth Led Worship at all three services! 2010-11Program information will also be available at Children and Youth Ministries Family Carnival from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with Games, Bounce House, Face Painting, and Snow Cones. The whole Advent community is invited to help kick-off a new year of children, youth, and family ministry at Advent!

SUNDAY SCHOOL IS BEGINNING SOON! If you have not already done so, please register your children now for Sunday School. Forms are available in Advent’s office or on the website. We still need several high school or adult volunteers too. Registration is available in the narthex and on the Advent website, www.adventolathe.org.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PARENT ORIENTATION and the first day of Sunday school class will be on September 19th at 9:30am. Parents should join their kids for the Sunday School opening on the 19th.  When the kids go to class, parents will be given information about this year and a special welcome from Pastor Susan.

FAITH STEPPING STONE #2 CLASS - Families with incoming 3 year olds are invited to attend the Faith Stepping Stone #2 Class on Wednesday, September 15th at 6:30pm.  Enjoy a night with other parents during the parent class while children entering Sunday School for the first time will have a PJ party and get a taste of what Sunday Scholl will be like. The Faith Stepping Stone Blessing in Worship will be Sunday, September 19th at 11am. Sign up on the Children’s Ministry Board outside the church office or email Kari Holt at kholt@adventolathe.org.

FAITH STEPPING STONE #3 CLASSES for First Communion - Second-graders and their families are encouraged to join us in these classes at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. We host parents and children at the first class which is the learning focus. On the second evening the kids will bake communion bread and create their own chalice. The First Communion Blessing in Worship will be on Sunday, Nov. 7.  Sign up on the Children’s Ministry Board or contact Sherry Owens at sowens@adventolathe.org for more information.

THRIVENT MEMBERS - CRITICAL ALERT!   You will be receiving a letter regarding Thrivent Choice. Please remember to call Thrivent or get online to direct your funds to either Advent Lutheran Church or Advent Preschool. These directed funds are replacing what Thrivent used to offer congregations as matching funds, so we are counting on you to “choose” Advent and our ministries!  If you have any questions about the Thrivent Choice program, please call Jim Feret at 913-768-0066 or your personal Thrivent representative.

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE REPAIRS/UPDATES at the west end of the building, take a walk and see what some good Advent workers can do in the aftermath of a water sprinkler “incident” and subsequent ceiling collapse.  A full list of those who deserve your thanks will run in the September Advisor.

NEXT WEEKEND?  Join us for THURSDAY WORSHIP Each Thursday at 7 p.m.  The Advent community gathers for an informal service of Holy Communion. The readings and the sermon are the same as for the upcoming Sunday, so if you know you will be out of town, or have previous Sunday morning obligations, plan to attend worship at Advent on Thursdays at 7 p.m.  Casual attire is appropriate.

WORSHIP ASSISTANTS - Check out the Worship Assistant Bulletin Board outside the office. We have schedules for readers, ushers and communion assistants posted so that you can pick your Sundays and plan earlier. We will also post schedules on line and continue to send out the weekly email as additional reminders and opportunities to fill last minute openings.
